Much of our lives are filled with fear. We’re afraid of failure, we’re afraid of success. We’re afraid of certain people; afraid that they will physically or emotionally hurt us. We’re afraid for the safety and well being of our children. We’re afraid of change; the loss of routine, and the fear of the unknown. Sometimes we’re even afraid of good news and promise; “I’ve been disappointed and disillusioned one too many times, can I really trust?
For good or for bad, this time of year brings with it a great deal of change. Summer is coming to a close, fall is in the air. Vacations are ending, school’s beginning. There are new kings and queens of the hill, and there are new underclass boys and girls afraid of that first day and the unknown. Moms and dads say good by to another year and stage with their children and prepare for the next.
We, as a community here at St. Luke, will also be experiencing change this fall. There will be some familiarity with the routines of having worship, Sunday school, Bible studies, fellowship groups, but there will be change too. We will begin some new programs, new approach to youth ministry, and new space in our remodeling of our old building. We say good by to some saints who have been among us for a long time, who have now gone to join the saints in light, while at the same time greeting new people coming into our midst. Whether its programs or people, we are constantly changing, and being changed.
While some people get excited about change, others grieve the past and loss of the way it was. However, Jesus has some encouraging words for us: “Do not be afraid little flock, it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” Jesus’ words are of great comfort for us at this time of rapid change in our world, and perhaps in our lives, and as we all face unknowns. It’s o.k. to grieve, but don’t be afraid. That’s not an order, it’s a promise. Our Lord will be with us to guide us, protect us, rescue us, and love us in our successes and failures. We are free to meet these changes ahead with boldness in faith, knowing that more changes can and certainly will come.
Peace be with you.
