What are our jobs about? As a youth director, is it activities, fun, and bible studies? As a music director / worship planner, is it about the music and worship? As a secretary, is it about running an office and getting the appropriate information out? As an administrator, is it about keeping books, or keeping the organism of the church body organized and running effectively? As children’s ministry coordinator, is it about curriculum, running an effective program, recruiting and training volunteers? Or as a pastor, is it about interpreting God’s word for God’s people, leading worship, and visiting those in need? And not just with church work, but in every job, it is about the tasks at hand – selling the product, packing the groceries, filling out the paper work, or picking up the garbage?
The answer, of course, is yes! and no. It is all of that, and so much more. All of our jobs are about people – ministering to people. The music is to minister to people, as well as help people in their ministry to God. This is true also of running the office, keeping the organism organized, providing a sound curriculum and effective Sunday school program, youth program, or any program. This is true in preaching God’s word, and visiting people in need. This is true of packing a person’s groceries, picking up their trash, or providing them with a product you sell. God has given us all vocations for the purpose of service to our neighbor. While we get caught up in the tasks at hand – the daily grind, to-do lists, demands on our time and attention, interruptions, paper work – we often loose sight of the service or ministry to people behind all that we do.
Vocation is about a Holy Calling. In all that we do, God has a purpose and plan for our work – to serve our neighbor. God bless you in the mundane, daily grind. And even more, God bless the person who will be served by you today.
